This walk takes you up to the Abbey via Caedmon’s Trod and then back down the 199 steps. There is an account of the route on Tripadvisor but here are my directions.
Walk along Church Street towards the swing bridge and just before the junction where the road bends left to the bridge, look for a narrow entrance on the right named Caedmon’s Trod.
Go through that entrance and follow the path and walk up the steps. At the top of the steps you will see a sign post which directs you to the Abbey car park.
This leads you across a field along a well-marked path to another sign post.
Keeping straight on you now have the wall of the Abbey site on your left. You shortly pass one of the entrances to the Abbey (entrance not open during the winter months) and you carry on until you reach the road.
Turn left and walk along the road to the open space known as Abbey Plain. At this point you can visit the Abbey if you wish.
To return to Abrahams Quay, descend the 199 steps.
It’s then an easy walk back along Church Street to your starting point.
